Actual Cruise Track
General notes:

CalCOFI 1004MF: 27 Apr - 17 May 2010 on NOAA RV Miller Freeman; Leg III CalCOFI 68 stations occupied. RV Miller Freeman's spring cruise had three legs: Legs I & II were the DEPM (Daily Egg Production Method) Sardine Cruise and Leg III was CalCOFI 1004MF, occupying the 75-station CalCOFI station pattern. Please refer to the CalCOFI 1004MF Cruise webpages or the CalCOFi 1004MF Cruise Data Report PDF for more cruise info.

A Sea-Bird Electronics, Inc., Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) instrument (Seabird 911, Serial number 1049) with a rosette was deployed at each station on these cruises. Weight restrictions prevented the use of the 24-bottle rosette typically employed on CalCOFI cruises. The substitute rosette was equipped with 12 ten-liter plastic (PVC) bottles equipped with epoxy-coated springs. A shortage of Viton o-rings resulted in them being installed in only half of the bottles; the remainder of the bottles had neoprene o-rings. Every effort was made to insure that primary productivity samples were taken from bottles containing Viton o-rings, however an on board study (not included) determined that any potential toxic effect on the phytoplankton resulting in the use of neoprene o-rings was negligible. Therefore, some primary productivity samples were taken from these bottles. Each CTD/rosette cast usually sampled 12 depths to a maximum sampling depth of 525 meters, bottom depth permitting. Because of limitations with the 12 bottle rosette and the need to sample specific target depths, a second cast was often necessary to collect water for the primary productivity assay. Occasional stations have multiple bottles tripped at the same depth to provide more water for ancillary programs. The sample spacing was designed to sample depth intervals as close as 10 meters around the sharp upper thermocline features such as the chlorophyll, oxygen, nitrite maxima and the shallow salinity minimum. Salinity, oxygen and nutrients were determined at sea for all depths sampled. Chlorophyll-a and phaeopigments were determined at sea on samples from the top 200 meters, bottom depth permitting.

CalCOFI 1004MF was the third leg of the RV Miller Freeman's Spring Cruise. Legs I & II occupied stations including CTD station, although those data are not represented here.
The 1st station occupied of Leg III was the 123rd station occupied, so it was designated Sta & CTD Cast #123. The stations on the rest of Leg III were designated #124-191. There were 75 casts on 68 stations occupied. As mentioned above, additional primary productivity casts were performed to provide extra bottle depths and seawater for the daily 14C primary productivity incubation experiments. These casts, if ;done in addition to 12-bottle hydrographic casts, were numbered adding 600 to the order occupied. There were 9 separate prodo casts: Cast 628 (prodo cast on sta 028), Cast 634 (prodo cast on sta 034), Casts 638, 663, 667, 671, 674, 678, & 682 (last extra prodo cast on sta 082).
Type I (chl max 0-40m) bottle depths (meters): 515, 400, 300, 200, 150, 100, 75, 50, 30, 20, 10, surface
Type II (chl max 40-80m) bottle depths (meters): 515, 400, 300, 200, 150, 100, 75, 60, 45, 30, 15, surface
Type III (chl max 80-120m) bottle depths (meters): 515, 400, 300, 200, 150, 100, 90, 80, 65, 45. 20, surface
Prodo bottle depths are determined by the secchi and chl max depth then calculated to match incubation tube light levels.

Cast specific Notes from Console Ops:
CalCOFI 1004MF CTD Notes

CalCOFI 1004MF sail on NOAA RV Miller Freeman, the first and only CalCOFI on RV Miller Freeman.
We used our rosette but were limited to only 12 bottles since the winch could not handle the full weight.
There were three casttypes - I, II, & III
Type I, chl max between 0-40m: 515, 400, 300, 200, 150, 100, 75, 50, 30, 20, 10, 2 meters
Type II, chl max between 40-80m: 515, 400, 300, 200, 150, 100, 75, 60, 45, 30, 15, 2 meters
Type III, chl max between 80-120m: 515, 400, 300, 200, 150, 100, 90, 80, 65, 45, 20, 2 meters

Since only 12 bottles were closed, separate primary productivity casts of (usually) 6 bottles were performed on the noontime stations.
600 was added to the station/order_occupied/cast number, for example on station/cast 034, a second cast 634 was done.
If prodo was on a shallow station that required less than 12 bottles, an extra cast was not needed.

CalCOFI 1004MF was leg III of the NOAA RV Miller Freeman's Spring survey. Legs I & II were DEPM (Daily Egg Production Method) fisheries legs focused on fisheries. CTD casts were preformed but not a part of this dataset.
Since leg III was a continuation of the cruise, leg III's cast 001 was numbered cast 123 (the 123rd cast of the combined legs). This was done at the request of NOAA Fisheries so their book-keeping order occupied would be continuous.
